This is the most accessible of Richard Wagner’s operas and is a good production. Cursed to sail for eternity with his ghostly crew, the Dutchman can only be saved by the love of a faithful woman. Premiered in 1843, Wagner’s first great opera looks back to the Gothic mysteries of his youth, opening with a thrilling storm in which echoes of Beethoven, Mendelssohn and Weber can be heard, and punctuated by folk-like ballads for the sailors whose lives depend on the sea and the women who wait for their return.

Guests and partners are warmly welcomed. Although we have already bought tickets for this performance, if you are interested in joining us, please contact Eve Mitleton-Kelly at [email protected] and she can get you a ticket, if available. We have also planned to watch a performance of La Traviata on 27th July. Please reach out to Eve should you wish to purchase a ticket for this performance as well.
