Our guest speaker this month is Baroness Hale of Richmond, a British judge who was President of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom from 2017 until 2020 and the third person and only woman to serve in this role. In 1984, Baroness Hale became the first woman and youngest person to be appointed to the Law Commission overseeing important reforms in family law. In 2004 she joined the House of Lords as a Lord of Appeal in Ordinary, and the only woman to have been appointed to that position, before transferring to the new Supreme Court in 2009 with the other Law Lords.
Lady Hale presided over the Supreme Court's ruling in 2017 that the government could not trigger Article 50 to leave the EU without an Act of Parliament, upholding Parliamentary sovereignty, and again in 2019 that the Prime Minister Boris Johnson's prorogation of Parliament was unlawful; cases which featured in Lady Hale's acclaimed biography Spider Woman. In her latest book, With the Law on Our Side, she considers nuances of the judicial system and provides a timely reminder of the importance of justice and the rule of law.
Please join us at the final Guest Speaker Address of this year to hear from one of the country's greatest ever jurists, and one who has furthered the cause of women practitioners and other women professionals throughout the English Speaking World, possibly as much as any other woman.
