In these two lectures Dr Ben Street will look at modern art in America from the 1920s to the 1950s.
Along the way, the lectures will discuss the rise of American Modernism and contact with its European counterparts; the development of photography as an art form; and the emergence of important museums and galleries in the US.
Historical contexts will include the Wall Street Crash and subsequent Depression; Roosevelt's New Deal and the employment of artists; and America's entry into, and emergence from, World War II.
Artists who will be discussed will include Georgia O'Keefe, Alfred Stieglitz, Edward Hopper, Grant Wood, Alice Neel, Philip Guston, Mark Rothko, and many more.
