Established by Roger de Montgomery in the 11th century, Arundel Castle is known as the seat of the Earls of Arundel and the Dukes of Norfolk. It is a motte-and-bailey castle set high on a hill overlooking the River Arun, and has a historic art collection and stunning gardens. There are approximately 20 rooms open to the public for us to explore, including the Fitzalan Chapel, the huge Baron’s Hall and Victorian bedrooms.

Restoration of the building was undertaken by Henry, 15th Duke of Norfolk, and was completed in 1900, being one of the first castles to be fitted with electricity, central heating and service lifts. There is a collection of fine furniture from the 16th century, tapestries, clocks and many portraits by van Dyck, Gainsborough, Mytens, Canaletto and others.

Each year there is a temporary exhibition curated on some aspect of the Castle’s history. This year the exhibition focuses on the relationship between Queen Victoria and the Dukes of Norfolk, covering over 60 years.

Our visit is timed to catch the gardens in Springtime, which should be particularly lovely, as the gardens provide one of the most amazing Spring displays in the country. The Rose Garden in particular will be worth seeing at this time of year. The extensive gardens and landscape cover 38 acres.

An interesting fact – people born in Arundel are known as ‘mullets’ due to the presence of the fish in the river Arun.

We can have a light lunch in the Servants’ Hall Café. There will be an opportunity to visit the picturesque market town of Arundel close by, with its antique shops, art galleries and Gothic-style Roman Catholic Cathedral. Everything is within walking distance.

Return Train tickets from Victoria Station: £20.50 (£13.60 with Railcard) to be booked and paid individually. We will take the 9.35am train which takes 1h 27mins. The Castle is 10 minutes’ walk away from the station.

Entrance to Arundel House and Gardens: £29 (£31 inc. bedrooms). Entrance to the Gardens is free with Historic Gardens membership, then upgrade ticket for entry to the Castle.
