This is a ten-week course created by Imperial College at KCWC's request. Led by Dr Sarah James, an enthusiastic and welcoming tutor, we will embark upon a broad survey of Shakespeare's work across drama and poetry. There will be a strong emphasis on the historical context as we chart his responses to contemporary social, political and religious concerns. We will also look at Shakespeare's work in relation to the records of his life, asking how much his personal life had an impact on his writing.
In the classes we will look at individual texts in detail and consider scenes from filmed productions, discussing their effect on the audience.
This course offers deeper engagement for students who attended the 5-week summer introduction to Shakespeare, but no previous knowledge is required.
