Our guest speaker this month is Julie Weston, the Executive Director of the Orange Tree Theatre in Richmond following her appointment in July 2025. The theatre is highly acclaimed and is noted for its artistic excellence including high quality, intimate productions that combine new plays, bold revivals and rarely seen classics. It was named Joint Theatre of the Year at The Stage Awards in 2025.
Julie is an experienced leader in the arts and not-for-profit sectors, with a career dedicated to organisational development and change. She has held senior leadership roles with a variety of cultural and arts organisations including that of Administrative Director at the Edinburgh International Book Festival, at the Audience Agency, Wac Arts and Cardboard Citizens. Julie has a track record of creating values-led, resilient organisations and environments where people feel empowered to take responsibility.
She will tell us about the successful running of the Orange Tree Theatre and how to stage a play, including the programming and liaison with the actors. In spite of an environment which receives no financial support from the Arts Council or the government, Julie will explain how the theatre has managed to achieve consistent commercial and critical success.
