In this lecture we will be focus on the icons of the early church, mostly at the Virgin Mary in early icon images.  The Virgin Mary has such a large range of artwork.  We will be looking at the key figures, style, and context of the work against the background of history and conflicts.

We have a new lecturer for you.  Elisa Stafferini, art historian, has been highly recommended by one of our members.  She specializes in Renaissance and early modern Italian art.  Her research interests encompass early modern visual culture, iconography and iconology, gender and politics in art, and the relationship between word and image. She has delivered lectures on Renaissance art and iconography in both Italy and the UK and taught the module “Art in London before 1600” at University College London.

Please come at 9:30 for a coffee or tea. The lecture begins promptly at 10:00 and we aim to finish by 12:15.  Please remember it is a dress code at the club so please no jeans or trainers.
