If you want to learn about opera, whether you are familiar with the genre or just beginning to enjoy it, then this two-part course will offer you new ways of listening to opera, by exploring a wide variety of operas and their social and cultural contexts, ranging from the eighteenth century to the present day.

The course will introduce the various elements of opera production in the first term (Part A), and will explore some of the more general ideas around opera in the second term (Part B). In each class we will take a single work as a case study, outlining some of the general history of the composer and of the background to the opera, discussing the plot, the characters, the music, and different approaches to staging.

The two courses that make up this series (Part A: 29 September - 1 December; and Part B: 12 January - 30 March) are open to all and you do not need any previous knowledge or qualifications to join the class, which will be supported by a PowerPoint presentation, plenty of audio and video examples of the operas, and many opportunities for discussion.  Following each class, the presentation and video links will be sent to participants, so you will still have the information, if you miss a class.

The tutor, Dr Bruno Bower (FHEA, FRSA), is a lively and enthusiastic tutor whose love of music is infectious. He is a musicologist, performer, composer, and music editor, as well as a highly experienced teacher. He currently teaches at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and Imperial College London. He is also the principal oboist of West London Sinfonia and the cor anglais player for Chelsea Opera Group.

Part A: Lectures will take place on the following Mondays (in 2025)

    September: 29th

    October: 6th, 13th, 20th

    November: 3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th

    December: 1st

(Part B: Lectures will take place on Mondays 12 January - 30 March)

Tickets: Each course Part is payable in advance and the cost includes tea/coffee and biscuits.  You may purchase the Part A series for £180 using the instructions below.  The Part B series may be purchased for £220 on the Event page for January 12th, 2026 "Discovering Opera - Part B"

This is a unique joint venture between KCWC and Imperial College, so there is a two part ticketing process:

Step #1: Please make your payment directly to Imperial College using the following link:

Are you baffled by Brahms? Perplexed by Prokofiev? Stumped by Strauss? On this course Bruno Bower invites you to join him on a journey to discover new ways to understand classical music, without any of the obscure jargon.

The focus of the course is on the stories music tells:

    • What kinds of stories do composers tell through music?
    • What methods do they use to tell them?
    • What kind of historical stories can we discover through music?
    • And how has historical music been shaped by the social and cultural context of the time?

Knowing who, how, and why people created, played, and listened to music makes it much easier to relate to the deeper levels of texture and structure that lie behind the sounds we hear.

The course is suitable for people with or without previous knowledge of classical music. On the course you will gain fresh perspectives on some famous works of classical music, and you will have opportunities to discover some less well-known pieces along the way.

London has a huge number of music venues, and one of the aims of the course is to give you greater confidence to enjoy classical music and to encourage you to hear classical music played live.

    What, Where, When?

    • Twenty 2-hour classes, each with a five-minute break in the middle.
    • Nine classes for Part 1 in Autumn, eleven classes for Part 2 in Spring
    • Fridays 10:30am - 12:30pm
    • Part 1: 3rd October to 12th December (no class 31st October and 7th November)
    • Part 2: 9th January to 27th March (no class 20th February)

    Catch-Up Material

Individual sessions will not be recorded, as they are intended to be interactive (they are classes, not lectures), and any recording risks inhibiting discussion. However, detailed PowerPoint slides will be circulated after every class along with a selection of YouTube links. Each session is self-contained, so it should not impact on enjoyment of the rest if you miss any.

    Tutor

Dr Bruno Bower (FHEA, FRSA) is a lively and enthusiastic tutor whose love of music is infectious. He is a musicologist, performer, composer, and music editor, as well as a highly experienced teacher. He currently teaches at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and Imperial College London. Previous teaching work has included Cambridge University, Royal Holloway, Surrey University, Brunel University, and the Royal College of Music.

He has written and presented on subjects as diverse as Gilbert and Sullivan, John Cage, and Victorian polymaths, and he is the General Editor for critical editions of music by Peter Gellhorn and Norman O’Neill, as well as editorial consultant on the AHRC-funded ‘Music, Migration and Mobility’ project at the RCM. He is also the principal oboist of West London Sinfonia and the cor anglais player for Chelsea Opera Group.

This month your cuppa for our second Tea Time Talk should be Yorkshire as Nicholas Merchant discusses the region's most famous and prolific architect. Known as John Carr of York, he was the man to whom to turn if any of the rich Yorkshiremen of the 18th century wanted a house to show off their newly acquired wealth.

Born in the county, the son of a mason, Carr was a good solid pair of hands in which to place your aspirations for a fashionable Palladian mansion. Assiduous and attentive, he was comfortable in his career, wise enough to have a good little "sideline" in also designing bridges many of these still in use today. He had the wherewithal and knowledge to only contract with the best to fulfill the costly visions of his aristocratic clients - eg. plasterwork was by the renowned Joseph Rose and furnishings often by Chippendale. Whether it was from his masterpiece Harewood House for the uber rich Lascelles or Basildon Park closer to London though built for a fellow Yorkshireman, Carr died a wealthy man in his own right with a fortune of 150,00 pounds.

Please join us to learn about this architectural titan whose stamp continues to resonate on masterful buildings.

Millennial expat couple Anna and Tom are living the dream in Berlin, in a bright, plant-filled apartment in Neukölln. They are young digital creatives, freelancers without too many constraints. They have a passion for food, progressive politics, sexual experimentation and Berlin's twenty-four-hour party scene.

Their ideal existence is also that of an entire generation, lived out on Instagram, but outside the images they create for themselves, dissatisfaction and ennui burgeon. Their work as graphic designers becomes repetitive. Friends move back home, have children, grow up. An attempt at political activism during the refugee crisis proves fruitless. And in that picture-perfect life Anna and Tom feel increasingly trapped, yearning for an authenticity and a sense of purpose that seem perennially just out of their grasp.

With the stylistic mastery of Georges Perec and nihilism of Michel Houellebecq, Perfection, translated from Italian by Sophie Hughes, is a sociological novel about the emptiness of contemporary existence, beautifully written, brilliantly scathing.

Arundhati Roy’s first work of memoir, this is a soaring account, both intimate and inspiring, of how the author became the person and the writer she is, shaped by circumstance, but above all by her relationship to her extraordinary, singular mother Mary, who she describes as ‘my shelter and my storm’.

Distraught and even a “little ashamed” at the intensity of her response to the death of the mother she ran from at age eighteen, Arundhati began to write Mother Mary Comes to Me. The result is this astonishing, disconcerting, surprisingly funny chronicle—unique and simultaneously universal, of the author’s life, from childhood to the present, from Kerala to Delhi.

With the scale, sweep, and depth of her novels and the passion, political clarity, and warmth of her essays, Mother Mary Comes to Me is an ode to freedom, a tribute to thorny love and savage grace—a memoir like no other.

Please register for this course only if you are taking/have taken the first course (Part A).  We are hoping to offer another series starting in April or September, so please do email the Activity Leader to express your interest in the first course.

If you want to learn about opera, whether you are familiar with the genre or just beginning to enjoy it, then this two-part course will offer you new ways of listening to opera, by exploring a wide variety of operas and their social and cultural contexts, ranging from the eighteenth century to the present day.

In this second 11-week course (Part B), we will explore some of the more general ideas around opera. In each class we will take a single work as a case study, outlining some of the general history of the composer and of the background to the opera, discussing the plot, the characters, the music, and different approaches to staging. As per the first series (Part A), classes will be supported by a PowerPoint presentation and plenty of audio and video examples of the operas, and there will be opportunities for discussion.  Following each class, the presentation and video links will be sent to participants, so you will still have the information if you miss a class.

For our final Tea Time Talk, Nicholas Merchant will take us through a master in Victorian Gothic Revival, William Burges. Born in London in 1827, Burges' career spanned the late Georgian into High Victorian period with his death in 1881 capping a prolific number of buildings.

A critic and arbiter of Victorian taste, Burges was a student of French medieval architecture similarly promoted by Viollet le Duc. He visited the Continent during his apprenticeship to gain first hand knowledge going on to design cathedrals in France, Ireland, and Australia. But in 1864, the passionate medievalist John Patrick Crichton Stuart, 3rd Marquess of Bute, would become Burges' most important patron commissioning him for an extensive restoration of Cardiff Castle. There Burges worked until his own death on a series of residential apartments developing an elaborate scheme of interior decoration that would set the standard for Victorian Gothic taste. Burges simultaneously adopted the style for his own home, Tower House in London, so passionate was he with the Victorian vocabulary.

Please join us to learn about this Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects and an Associate of the Royal Academy whose portfolio, treatises and drawings were trend setting.

Few countries in the world stimulate the five senses with as much intensity as India. The home to approximately 1.4 billion people, India is a place that defies easy descriptions. From the buzzing energy of Delhi and the abundance of crafts in Jaipur to the wonder of the Taj Mahal in Agra, India’s many regions offer larger-than-life experiences that are spectacular in very different ways. This itinerary offers ample time to explore lavish palaces, immerse yourself in the culture and see all the highlights of India’s major cities—Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, Jodhpur and Udaipur.

I have been working and traveling to India for more than 25 years and have a passion for the country, which I love to share. I have taken numerous groups of women to India with great success, and I am pleased to inform you that I have organized my next adventure for January 2026.  My travel business grew out of my desire to share the people and places I love in India.  I have established close and long-standing relationships with local restaurants, exclusive shops and wholesalers, hotels, private tour guides and local artisans and it would be my pleasure to share my discoveries. It will be an amazing experience with a spectacular itinerary, fabulous hotels, great food and the very best guides who will share their expert knowledge of the history and culture of India, past and present!

My trips are designed for small groups and are personal and intimate. Every detail from the time of arrival to departure and everything in between is handled so all you have to do is relax and create lasting memories. This adventure has been passionately designed by me. This trip of a lifetime provides an unforgettable glimpse into the local life, culture and history of "Incredible India" this magical country.

Please contact me for the itinerary, which gives details of the route, hotels, restaurants and sights, together with cost, booking and visa information. The tour will operate with a minimum of 8 people. Once you have confirmed the itinerary, a non-refundable deposit of USD 1,500.00 will need to be paid to Secrets of India, the travel company with whom I have organized our trip. Also, please let me know the person with whom you will be rooming or whether you want a room on your own, for which there will be a single supplement charge. I will then introduce you to Secrets of India, as they will need further information from you (i.e. passport details).

Please let me know if you have any questions or need any more information. Feel free to pass this along to anyone you think would be interested in joining the trip.

Curated by violinist Roman Mints, this year’s Another Music Festival celebrates the legacy of composers who lived and created in exile — some forced, some chosen — and how separation from their homeland reshaped their art.

From historical giants such as Chopin, Stravinsky, Hindemith, and Enescu to neglected voices like Ukrainian composer Theodore Akimenko, the festival traces a journey through music shaped by migration.

Across three evenings of chamber music, international artists perform works by Chopin, Rachmaninov, Stravinsky, Hindemith, Enescu and others, alongside new works and UK premieres by contemporary composers who continue the conversation between displacement and creativity.

Each programme offers a different perspective on exile — from nostalgia and memory to renewal and transformation.

An exhilarating, twisted tale of desire, suspicion, and obsession between two women staying in the same house in the Dutch countryside during the summer of 1961—a powerful exploration of the legacy of WWII and the darker parts of our collective past.

A house is a precious thing...

It is 1961 and the rural Dutch province of Overijssel is quiet. Bomb craters have been filled, buildings reconstructed, and the war is truly over. Living alone in her late mother’s country home, Isabel knows her life is as it should be—led by routine and discipline. But all is upended when her brother Louis brings his graceless new girlfriend Eva, leaving her at Isabel’s doorstep as a guest, to stay for the season.

Eva is Isabel’s antithesis: she sleeps late, walks loudly through the house, and touches things she shouldn’t. In response, Isabel develops a fury-fueled obsession, and when things start disappearing around the house—a spoon, a knife, a bowl—Isabel’s suspicions begin to spiral. In the sweltering peak of summer, Isabel’s paranoia gives way to infatuation—leading to a discovery that unravels all Isabel has ever known. The war might not be well and truly over after all, and neither Eva—nor the house in which they live—are what they seem.

Mysterious, sophisticated, sensual, and infused with intrigue, atmosphere, and sex, The Safekeep is a brilliantly plotted and provocative debut novel you won’t soon forget.

For the first time ever, a novel by John Le Carré is brought to life in a thrilling stage adaptation.

"The Spy Who Came in from the Cold" is a 1963 Cold War spy novel by the British author John le Carré.  It depicts Alec Leamas, a British intelligence officer, being sent to East Germany as a faux defector to sow disinformation about a powerful East German intelligence officer.

This is a story of betrayal not only between nations but between the human soul.

The Wallace Collection houses, among its many treasures, exquisite objects and pieces of furniture of royal provenance that belonged to Marie-Antoinette or her entourage.  This tour will be an opportunity to discover not only the taste, imagination and style of the young "Dauphine" and later Queen of France, but it will also enable us to understand her story and fate: her arrival at Versailles as a young teenager, her desire to escape the stifling formality of court etiquette, her circle of friends, her enemies, her insatiable desire for light entertainment and luxury objects, her taste for the picturesque and the new sensitivity, her lack of judgement.

This tour, led by Muriel Carré, will enable you to understand Marie-Antoinette's enduring legacy as a style icon, and will be the indispensable introduction to the V&A's exhibition on until March 2026.

Note: We will meet at 10:15am at the entrance of The Wallace Collection.

Two of Britain's greatest painters, J.M.W. Turner and John Constable were also the greatest of rivals. Born within a year of each other - Turner in 1775, Constable in 1776 - they used landscape art as a way to reflect the changing world around them.

Raised in the gritty heart of Georgian London, Turner quickly became a rising star of the art world despite his humble beginnings. Meanwhile Constable, the son of a wealthy Suffolk merchant, was equally determined to forge his own path as an artist but faced a more arduous rise to acclaim.

Though from different worlds they shared a profound connection to nature, and both set their sights on transforming landscape painting, investing it with layers of meaning and emotion.

Marking 250 years since their births, the landmark exhibition at Tate Britain from 27/11/25 to 12/04/26 explores Turner and Constable's intertwined lives and legacies.

June, 1940. German troops enter Paris and hoist the swastika over the Arc de Triomphe. The dark days of Occupation begin. How would you have survived? By collaborating with the Nazis, or risking the lives of you and your loved ones to resist?

The women of Paris faced this dilemma every day – whether choosing between rations and the black market, or travelling on the Metro, where a German soldier had priority for a seat. Between the extremes of defiance and collusion was a vast moral grey area which all Parisiennes had to navigate in order to survive.

Anne Sebba has sought out and interviewed scores of women, and brings us their unforgettable testimonies. Her fascinating cast includes both native Parisiennes and temporary residents: American women and Nazi wives; spies, mothers, mistresses, artists, fashion designers and aristocrats. The result is an enthralling account of life during the Second World War and in the years of recovery and recrimination that followed the Liberation of Paris in 1944. It is a story of fear, deprivation and secrets – and, as ever in the French capital, glamour and determination.

Our guest speaker this month is the Scottish born actor and writer Neil Titley. Neil has spent his theatrical life focusing on one-man plays, in particular, a 40-year tour performing his Oscar Wilde solo performance, "Work is the Curse of the Drinking Classes". The play is set in Paris in 1898, a year after Wilde's release from prison and explores his life and misfortunes with wit and irreverence. It draws on Wilde's letters, essays and anecdotes in bringing his literary genius to life. The play has been a success on five continents and won the prestigious "Best Period Piece" at the United Solo Theatre Festival in New York. Neil has written an encyclopaedia of Victorian stories entitled "The Oscar Wilde World of Gossip" and several memoirs of the great author, poet and playwright. He is an Honorary Patron of the Oscar Wilde Society. Following Neil's talk, two members of the audience will be invited to read a scene from Wilde's famous play, "The Importance of Being Earnest'. The work, celebrated for its wit and repartee parodies contemporary dramatic norms and satirises late Victorian manners staunchly upheld by the formidable Lady Bracknell.

Respected, self-made businessman Joe (Bryan Cranston) prides himself on providing for his wife and their two sons.

While wartime delivers profits for the family, it comes at a price when his partner is charged with criminal manufacturing deals, and his eldest son goes missing in action.

Peacetime brings little peace of mind as Joe’s true involvement in the activity begins to surface, and he is suddenly confronted by the consequences of his actions.

Visionary director Ivo Van Hove (A View from the Bridge, A Little Life) reunites with Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad, Network) in this Arthur Miller classic that skewers the dishonest promise of the American Dream in this disturbingly prescient play.

NOTE: There will be an optional Pre-Theatre Dinner at your own expense. Details will be emailed from the activity coordinator closer to the event to the KCWC members who have purchased a ticket to the musical.

A bold new creation by pianist-narrator Pavel Timofeyevsky and his colleagues.

Pavel fuses music and narrative into living theatre, where history breathes, scandals burn, and forgotten voices sing again.  These aren't "talks with music."

They are musical stories come alive - dazzling, intimate, unforgettable.

"The Diva Machine"  (Third in a 5-part Series titled "How Women Changed the Music World")

    Power.  Glamour.  Scandal.

From Callas to Viardot, piano and voice unleash the rivalries, reinventions, and raw electricity of the women who didn't just sing opera -- they ruled it.

Graham Greene's classic exploration of love, innocence, and morality in Vietnam

"I never knew a man who had better motives for all the trouble he caused," Graham Greene's narrator Fowler remarks of Alden Pyle, the eponymous "Quiet American" of what is perhaps the most controversial novel of his career.

Pyle is the brash young idealist sent out by Washington on a mysterious mission to Saigon, where the French Army struggles against the Vietminh guerrillas. As young Pyle's well-intentioned policies blunder into bloodshed, Fowler, a seasoned and cynical British reporter, finds it impossible to stand safely aside as an observer. But Fowler's motives for intervening are suspect, both to the police and himself, for Pyle has stolen Fowler's beautiful Vietnamese mistress.

First published in 1956 and twice adapted to film, The Quiet American remains a terrifying and prescient portrait of innocence at large.

What connects the work of French artists, Berthe Morisot and Suzanne Valadon?

Berthe Morisot (1841-95) was born into an upper-middle-class family, received formal training as an artist, and became a pioneering figure in the Impressionist movement.  Despite the limitations imposed on women of her social status, she created bold, innovative works that challenged artistic and societal conventions, capturing everyday life from a distinctly female perspective.

Suzanne Valadon's  (1865-1938) working-class mother raised her alone, requiring Suzanne to work from a young age.  After holding various jobs, including posing as an artist's model, Suzanne began creating art herself.  Unbound by social norms, she socialised in bohemian circles and developed a bold, idiosyncratic style which defied conventions.

In this session, Jo Rhymer will consider the overlaps as well as the differences between these two significant artists, both of whom made major contributions to the development of French Modern Art.

Please note: the lecture is from 10:00am - 12:15pm with a break for coffee/tea. Come at 9:30am and have a chat!

When Jim overhears that he is about to be sold to a man in New Orleans, separated from his wife and daughter forever, he runs away until he can formulate a plan. Meanwhile, Huck has faked his own death to escape his violent father. As all readers of American literature know, thus begins the dangerous and transcendent journey by raft down the Mississippi River toward the elusive and unreliable promise of the Free States and beyond.

Brimming with nuanced humor and lacerating observations that have made Everett a literary icon, this brilliant and tender novel radically illuminates Jim's agency, intelligence, and compassion as never before. James is destined to be a major publishing event and a cornerstone of twenty-first-century American literature.

A bold new creation by pianist-narrator Pavel Timofeyevsky and his colleagues.

    Not lectures.  Not concerts.

These narrated performances are an art form in themselves - where piano, voice, and story ignite to bring forgotten histories, hidden passions, and musical revolutions to life.

Pavel fuses music and narrative into living theatre, where history breathes, scandals burn, and forgotten voices sing again.  These aren't "talks with music."

They are musical stories come alive - dazzling, intimate, unforgettable.

"Queens of the Salon"  (Fourth in a 5-part Series titled "How Women Changed the Music World")

Before women ruled the stage, they ruled the room.

Salons of Paris and St. Petersburg, velvet curtains pulled back.  Piano and voice whisper their secrets: they funded, they mentored, they made empires.

Never Mind, the first installment in Edward St. Aubyn's wonderful, wry, and profound Patrick Melrose Cycle, follows five-year-old Patrick through a single day, as the Melrose family awaits the arrival of guests.

Bright and imaginative, young Patrick struggles daily to contend with the searing cruelty of his father and the resignation of his embattled mother. But on this day he must endure an unprecedented horror—one that splits his world in two.

In Never Mind, St. Aubyn renders this vivid tragedy with profound grace and precision, and introduces us to the unforgettable, complex figure of Patrick Melrose.

June 1912 -- George Fabian-Lawrence, or Stony Jack as he is better known, picks through a heavy ball of clay brought to him by two workmen from a City of London worksite.  A glint of gold attracts his attention before a pearl earring tumbles into his hand followed by a Burmese ruby then Colombian emeralds, lapis lazuli from  Afghanistan and Iranian turquoise.  The greatest single cache of Elizabethan treasure - The Cheapside Hoard - has fallen into Stony Jack's covetous lap.

Join us to learn from author Victoria Shepherd about the underbelly of the Edwardian antiques trade at the height of the Empire.  Hear how mudlarkers, charlatans and chancers unearthed treasures and ghosts in her riveting and twisting tale of adventure and intrigue.

Micaelina Wautier - a 17th century trailblazer rediscovered.

Active in Brussels in the middle of the 17th century, she challenged the limits imposed on female artists at the time by working on an unusually varied range of subjects: from flowers and portraits to grand history paintings -which was a format usually reserved for her male counterparts.

In her most famous painting, The Triumph of Bacchus, she painted herself as a pagan bacchante in monumental scale, looking squarely at the viewer and confidently asserting her position as the maker.

Although Wautier was hugely successful in her time, her breathtaking paintings and her place in art history were almost lost in the 18th century.

This exhibition is on at the Royal Academy from 27 March - 21 June 2026.

Our lecturer will be Chantal Bortherton-Radciffe.

Please come at 9:30am for a coffee/tea. The lecture begins at 10:00am and we aim to finish at 12:15pm. There will be a break around 11:00am.

Welcome to the family,” Nina Winchester says as I shake her elegant, manicured hand. I smile politely, gazing around the marble hallway. Working here is my last chance to start fresh. I can pretend to be whoever I like. But I’ll soon learn that the Winchesters’ secrets are far more dangerous than my own…

Every day I clean the Winchesters’ beautiful house top to bottom. I collect their daughter from school. And I cook a delicious meal for the whole family before heading up to eat alone in my tiny room on the top floor.

I try to ignore how Nina makes a mess just to watch me clean it up. How she tells strange lies about her own daughter. And how her husband Andrew seems more broken every day. But as I look into Andrew’s handsome brown eyes, so full of pain, it’s hard not to imagine what it would be like to live Nina’s life. The walk-in closet, the fancy car, the perfect husband.

I only try on one of Nina’s pristine white dresses once. Just to see what it’s like. But she soon finds out… and by the time I realize my attic bedroom door only locks from the outside,
    it’s far too late.

    But I reassure myself:
the Winchesters don’t know who I really am.

    They don’t know what I’m capable of…

See Baz Luhrmann's revolutionary film come to life on stage in the London West End.

The story follows Christian, an English writer, who travels to Paris to join the Bohemian revolution.  He visits the city's biggest night club, Moulin Rouge, and falls in love with its star performer and courtesan, Satine.

The Piccadilly Theatre has been transformed into a world of splendour and romance, of eye-popping excess, of glitz, grandeur, and glory!  A world where Bohemians and aristocrats rub elbows and revel in electrifying enchantment.

A theatrical celebration of truth, beauty, and freedom and - above all - love.

NOTE: There will be an optional Pre-Theatre Dinner at your own expense. Details will be emailed from the activity coordinator closer to the event to the KCWC members who have purchased a ticket to the musical.

In 1937, artists Sir Cedric Morris and his partner, Arthur Lett-Haines, set up the East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing at their home Benton End in Hadleigh, Suffolk. There, alongside other celebrated art students and friends, including a very young Lucian Freud, Francis Bacon and Vita Sackville-West, they explored an “outside the system” approach to creativity taking inspiration from Benton End’s beautiful gardens. Cedric, also a horticulturalist, was a breeder of bearded irises naming over 90 with the Benton prefix. The gardens equally inspired many innovative designers such as Beth Chatto, the most famous of her generation.

Whether you love interiors, gardening or painting, this talk presented by Beatrice Prosser-Snelling from The Garden Museum of London, will interest you. As the project director for the restoration of the garden and house which just received National Lottery Funding, she is the ideal guide until we will have the chance later in the year to visit Benton End with BADA Friends.

Patty and Walter Berglund were the new pioneers of old St. Paul—the gentrifiers, the hands-on parents, the avant-garde of the Whole Foods generation. Patty was the ideal sort of neighbor, who could tell you where to recycle your batteries and how to get the local cops to actually do their job. She was an enviably perfect mother and the wife of Walter's dreams. Together with Walter—environmental lawyer, commuter cyclist, total family man—she was doing her small part to build a better world.

But now, in the new millennium, the Berglunds have become a mystery. Why has their teenage son moved in with the aggressively Republican family next door? Why has Walter taken a job working with Big Coal? What exactly is Richard Katz—outré rocker and Walter's college best friend and rival—still doing in the picture? Most of all, what has happened to Patty? Why has the bright star of Barrier Street become "a very different kind of neighbor," an implacable Fury coming unhinged before the street's attentive eyes?

In his first novel since The Corrections, Jonathan Franzen has given us an epic of contemporary love and marriage. Freedom comically and tragically captures the temptations and burdens of liberty: the thrills of teenage lust, the shaken compromises of middle age, the wages of suburban sprawl, the heavy weight of empire. In charting the mistakes and joys of Freedom's characters as they struggle to learn how to live in an ever more confusing world, Franzen has produced an indelible and deeply moving portrait

Let's embark on a sensory walk through the streets of the Square Mile, London's financial district.  Forget about bonds and shares, and follow our guide, Emma, along a fragrant route that winds its way among the skyscrapers and the little alleyways of the city.

Each garden of the city is a little haven of peace tucked between glass and steel towers and historic buildings.

We invite you to walk those pocket parks together, rain or shine!

Note: We will be meeting at 2:00pm in the city - the exact meeting place to be specified later.

Our guest speaker this month is Lisa Aziz, the award winning TV and radio presenter and news anchor. After starting out as a reporter in local radio and television in the 1980's, Lisa became the main newscaster and a political programme host for TV-AM, the first national franchise for breakfast television in the UK in 1988 following which she presented a series of programmes on politics, current affairs, and business for the BBC and the Financial Times. In 1993 Lisa became a main news anchor and senior reporter at Sky News during which she anchored the reporting of the first Iraq war, the death of Princess Diana, the death of the Queen Mother, the Hajj Pilgrimage and the terrorist bombings in London, New York and Madrid. Since 2013, Lisa has been a news presenter on Global radio in London specialising in political and business issues including conducting investigative reporting and interviews with key figures in these fields and reporting on major national events, most recently as host of the LBC News Breakfast Show where she was the only woman presenter on national radio hosting such a show solo. Lisa has won numerous broadcasting awards including the Daily Mail's Media Personality of the Year Award at the GG2 Leadership and Diversity Awards, the Independent Radio News Gold Award in 2021 for an outstanding contribution to broadcasting and the Asian Media Award in 2022 for an outstanding contribution to the media. Lisa has demonstrated an exemplary commitment to charity and fundraising over a 30 year period including a range of ambassadorial roles for charities in the fields of childcare, the environment, entertainment, and the prison service. As the first British Asian female newsreader on mainstream television, Lisa will reveal to us how she successfully pioneered the traditionally male dominated culture in TV and radio and the medium's powerful proprietorial interests to become a much admired role model for women of all faiths and all ages.

ONE WOMAN, ONE BIKE AND ONE RICHLY ENTERTAINING, PERCEPTION-ALTERING JOURNEY OF DISCOVERY.

In 2015, as the Syrian War raged and the refugee crisis reached its peak, Rebecca Lowe set off on her bicycle across the Middle East. Driven by a desire to learn more about this troubled region and its relationship with the West, Lowe's 11,000-kilometre journey took her through Europe to Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, Sudan, the Gulf and finally to Iran.

It was an odyssey through landscapes and history that captured her heart, but also a deeply challenging cycle across mountains, deserts and repressive police states that nearly defeated her. Plagued by punctures and battling temperatures ranging from -6 to 48C, Lowe was rescued frequently by farmers and refugees, villagers and urbanites alike, and relied almost entirely on the kindness and hospitality of locals to complete this living portrait of the modern Middle East.

This is her evocative, deeply researched and often very funny account of her travels - and the people, politics and culture she encountered.

In the spring of 1860, Fabrizio, the charismatic Prince of Salina, still rules over thousands of acres and hundreds of people, including his own numerous family, in mingled splendour and squalor. Then comes Garibaldi's landing in Sicily and the Prince must decide whether to resist the forces of change or come to terms with them.

Executive Power and Trade Wars in a Trumpian World and their impact on Geopolitics and the Rule of Law.

Despite the many changes borne out of populist and strongmen governments, we continue to live in an interconnected world with trade policy, US Executive power and geopolitical events increasingly affecting and shaping our everyday lives. Our guest speaker this month is Rob Macaire who from positions at the highest levels of the Diplomatic and Security Services in the UK has borne witness to so many of the seminal and defining geopolitical events of the 21st century. Rob is the UK's former Ambassador to Iran and Kenya. He has held senior positions at the British Embassies in New Delhi and Bucharest and he was in Washington at the time of the terrorist attacks on the US in September 2001. He contributed to the Oslo Accords aimed at achieving a UN backed peace treaty between Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organisation. In Tehran, Rob negotiated for the release of UK detainees, he led the UK's role in multilateral nuclear talks with Iran and for a brief period he was unlawfully detained by the Iranian authorities. Farsi-trained and steeped in the region's dynamics, he offers a unique ground level perspective on risk, escalation and engagement: attributes which increasingly are in demand in international commercial risk management.

Following 9/11, Rob ran the Foreign Office's global consular services, directing crisis response for UK nationals worldwide and worked intensively on counter-terrorism as Head of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office Counter-Terrorism Department. He has advised two FTSE top-10 companies: BG Group and Rio Tinto on political risk, strategy and international affairs with briefings which transpose complex geopolitics into clear, actionable insight for boards and global teams.

Rob serves on the Council of Chatham House, is a member of the Advisory Committee of the Atlantic Council's Iran Strategy Project and continues to brief audiences at leading forums including an Asia House roundtable in July 2025 on Iran's regional dynamics. He is a trustee and director of The Thunderbird Project and supports life-saving drone use by emergency services. Rob is married to Alice Macaire a much admired member and former Board member of KCWC. We are honoured that Rob has agreed to address us at this month's Guest Speaker Address and he is uniquely qualified to do so.
